Why the course has several doses

A mother's antibodies protect a young puppy or kitten for their first weeks, but they also stop a vaccine from working. Nobody can tell exactly when they fade, so the course repeats the vaccine every few weeks until it is sure to take. That is why the last dose matters as much as the first, and why a puppy shouldn't mix with unvaccinated dogs until the course is done.
