Your pet

Weigh yourself holding them, then without them.

It's on the bag, often near the ingredients. Leave it empty to use a typical dry food (3,500 kcal per kg).

General guidance, not a diagnosis. If you're worried about your pet, talk to a vet.

How the amount is worked out

Vets start from resting energy: 70 times body weight in kilograms to the power of 0.75. That is what a pet burns lying still. It is then multiplied for life stage and lifestyle: about 3 for a puppy under four months, 2 for an older puppy, 1.6 for a neutered adult dog and 1.2 for a neutered adult cat, more for active or unneutered pets and less for pets losing weight.

How many meals

Dogs

Four small meals under four months, three until a year, then two a day. Bigger meals in one go can upset young stomachs.

Cats

Several small meals spread through the day suit how cats eat. Keep fresh water out all the time.

Questions people ask

It depends on weight, age, whether they are neutered and how active they are. The calculator uses the standard formula vets use, 70 times body weight in kilograms to the power of 0.75, then adjusts for life stage and lifestyle.
