Introducing a New Pet to Your Home
First impressions set the tone for years. Go slow, keep it positive, and let your pets set the pace.
Before the Introduction
- Set up a separate space for the newcomer with food, water and a bed.
- Swap scents: let each pet sniff the other’s bedding first.
- Make sure the resident pet’s vaccinations and parasite control are current.
The First Meetings
- Step 1: Scent onlyKeep them apart for a few days, swapping bedding and rotating spaces.
- Step 2: See but not touchAllow sight through a barrier or baby gate during calm, rewarded sessions.
- Step 3: Supervised meetingShort, leashed, positive meetings on neutral ground. End on a good note.
- Step 4: Build up timeLengthen sessions gradually; never force contact. Feed near each other to build good associations.
