Pet Feeding & Portion Guide
Over-feeding is one of the most common, and most preventable, pet health problems. Use this as a starting point and adjust to your pet’s body condition and your food’s label.
Meals Per Day by Age
| Age | Meals per day |
|---|---|
| 8–12 weeks | 4 |
| 3–6 months | 3 |
| 6–12 months | 2–3 |
| Adult | 2 |
| Senior | 2 (smaller, easy to digest) |
How to Get the Portion Right
- Start with the feeding guide on your food’s packaging for your pet’s weight.
- Split that daily amount across the meals above.
- Weigh food rather than guessing with a cup.
- Re-check every few weeks against body condition and adjust by 10% up or down.
- Count treats as part of the daily total (keep them under 10%).
Foods to Keep Off the Menu
- Chocolate, grapes, raisins, onions and garlic
- Cooked bones (they splinter)
- Xylitol (in sugar-free gum and sweets)
- Excess salt, fried and heavily spiced human food
